Traders Point Creamery Book Favorite

Traders Point Creamery Book Favorite

If you want a Enjoyable, Interesting and Informative book, pick up Michael Pollans "The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals." This book discusses the evolution of food and how it effects our lives. Simple choices, such as "what should we eat for dinner tonight" that can affect our lives, our childrens lives, and the earth.

Pollan tracks each of the food chains that sustain us—industrial, organic or alternative food, and food we feed ourselves—from the source to a final meal, and in the process develops a definitive account of the American way of eating.  His compelling narrative takes us from Iowa cornfields to food-science labs, from feedlots and fast-food restaurants to organic farms and hunting grounds, always emphasizing our dynamic coevolutionary relationship with the handful of plant and animal species we are dependent on.

This book has been nominated by Traders Point Creamery because we feel that it carries on our mission statement--- To nourish the land that nourishes us all. It suggests not only to eat Organic, but to really think and learn about what you are putting into your body as well as your childrens. We at Traders Point Creamery hope you feel safe and healthy putting our 100% Organic products into your body, knowing that it comes with like-minded people as well as a clean environment.

We hope you enjoy this book as well as carry on its message!

What's new on the Farm

What's new on the Farm

The farm is very happy to announce our new Farm Manager, Jason Hobson.  Jason has a great deal of experience in dairy farming and we are certain he will continue to carry on Traders Point Creamery's mission of sustainability with his strong leadership skills and expertise.

As always, the farm is extremely busy. Getting ready for winter, as well as calf season, makes the time fly by! Just in the past month we have had 24 Calves born. Not only is this great for the farm, but its also an extra incentive for you to visit the farm for a tour, lunch, or an ice cream treat. The farm is also on its last hay bailing cycle, so we will have enough food for the cows to eat during the cold winter.

We would like to say so-long to our English intern, Ollie. So-Long OLLIE! (We know you will miss bailing hay!)

Recipe of the Week

Recipe of the Week

Butternut Soup with Cumin

3 tablespoons olive oil
3 medium onions, peeled and sliced (3 cups)
3 pounds butternut squash, peeled and cut into 2-inch cubes (8 cups)
2 teaspoons salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon ground cumin
3 sprigs of fresh thyme
3 cups chicken broth, vegetable broth, or a commercial broth or bouillon cubes
Croutons

In a 6-quart heavy-bottomed soup pot, heat the oil over medium heat and stir in the onions. Cover, reduce the heat, and braise for 15 minutes, checking that the onions don't burn.
Add the squash to the onions. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, cumin, and thyme; cover the pot. Braise for another 15 minutes, checking once in a while that the vegetables do not burn.

Add the broth, bring to a boil, cover, reduce the heat, and simmer for 30 minutes or until the squash is tender.

Purée the soup in a blender or food processor in batches or use an immersion blender. Reheat the soup; taste for salt, and add more cumin to taste. Serve boiling hot with croutons.
