Our Friday Night Farmer’s Market is Clean AND Green

Our Friday Night Farmer’s Market is Clean AND Green

With such a wealth of good stuff from all the food groups represented at our farmer’s market, we sometimes forget there is even more for you to take home along with your edible groceries!  So before your feast, don't forget to wash your hands with handmade, from scratch, no synthetic, mainly organic, local, soaps from Flower Child Aromatherapy. Owner Jackie Pennywell also carries sachets and perfumes, and is a wealth of information on herbal therapy, so stop by her table for an informative chat. We’re also pleased to welcome TraceyClean back for their July visit. This Friday, owner Tracey Hiner will be offering her start-up cleaning kit (2 32-oz bottles of all-purpose, surface, or glass cleaner, 1 16-oz scouring powder, 1 16-oz dusting aid, and 1 8-oz air freshener) all for $23, a 25% saving off the regular price. All of TraceyClean’s products are formulated from safe and earth friendly ingredients that will make your home a cleaner (and greener place).

Now back to food for just a moment, because we’re in for a truly rare treat this weekend. Every few years when conditions are just right, the Southern Indiana farm that is home to Feast Catering sprouts wild chanterelle mushrooms, and this is one of those years. If you’ve not had this colorful and flavor-rich delicacy, come early to get your share, because these will go fast, and their season is short!  Also on the Feast table this week: blueberry crumb cake and basil hummus. So much for your tastebuds to love.

Recipe of the Week

Recipe of the Week

Quinoa (pronounced Keen-wah) is an ancient food that has been cultivated in the South American Andes (think Bolivia) since at least 3,000 B.C. It is a staple food (our equivalent of wheat) that the ancient Incas, who believed it was sacred, calling it the "mother grain."  Though technically not a grain (but whose counting?), quinoa is the seed of the Chenopodium or Goosefoot plant. The quinoa seed is high in protein, calcium and iron, and several of the B vitamins. It contains an almost perfect balanceof all eight essential amino acids (other grains / starches have only some), which is to say that it's an almost complete protein.  Try this wonderful recipe and see what you think of incorporating quinoa in your weekly round-up.

Quinoa tip:  Quinoa has a bitter tasting residue and needs to be rinsed a few times before using if it has not been pre-rinsed (most packaged quinoa has been rinsed, while bulk likely has not)

Quote of the Week

Quote of the Week

And this isn't to mention a growing revolt against milk processed to a fare-thee-well before any of us can get our hands on it. For all the continued prominence of horrible examples to the contrary, today it is more possible than it's been in at least half a century for many of us to find honest, unhomogenized whole milk from small herds and dairies run by businesspeople who care about well-tended milch animals and fresh milk flavor.
