Thanks to All Moms!

Thanks to All Moms!

Have you seen new mothers at the Creamery?  We salute new mothers with nestled little ones in baby slings as we see them eating at the Loft Restaurant or shopping at the Friday Night Green Market.  We support their commitment to providing high-quality, organic, wholesome food to their young ones and families.

We also salute our own mothers.  They instilled in us the passion, strength and work ethic that makes our Creamery possible.  Mom, it is from you that we learned the value of taking care of things, like the land that nourishes us all and the relationships that give life meaning.

But, have you seen our new mothers at the Creamery?!  We're talking about our milking cows, most of whom are new mothers.  These heifers are  “super moms” – working from dawn 'til dusk (chewing cud is tiring), grocery shopping (selecting nutrititious grasses and legumes to eat) , running errands (pasture to milking station to new pasture), and taking care of their young.  And that's not all - they provide milk for their young, and for us.  Without them, our delicious milk, yogurt, ice cream, and cheeses would not be possible!  So, as Mother Day approaches, we at the Creamery extend a warm “thank you” to all moms, human and otherwise.  Without their efforts, we would not be where we are.

Come for the Green Market, Stay for Dinner

Come for the Green Market, Stay for Dinner

Spring is in full swing at the Creamery, and our Green Market vendors are here to prove it! Enjoy two kinds of beautiful leaf lettuce from Seldom Seen Farm, perfect asparagus from Magnolia Hill Farm, colorful Easter Egg radishes brought to you by New Leaf Farm, and Redwine Farm’s crunchy rhubarb. Many of these vendors will also have a good supply of chemical-free tomato plants and other seedlings to get your home vegetable garden off to a good start. To round out your meals, enjoy the new Mag’s Dip from Country Mouse City Mouse on a toasted slice of Valentine Hill Farm’s whole grain breads, and get the freshest poultry, pork, beef, or cheeses from the Phelps, Swiss Connection and Seven Springs family farms.

If your taste buds aren’t tingling yet, please stop by to welcome Daina’s Petite Pies, our newest vendor. Daina and her family make a line of tasty single-serving savory and dessert pies that you take home frozen and pop into your oven. Space doesn’t allow descriptions of all the creative recipes they use, but they will be happy to tell you all about their pies when you visit.

Finally, we’ll be taking another small earth-friendly step by starting our leave-a-bag/take- a-bag station this week. As you enter the market area, you will see recyclable shopping bags hanging from a stand post.  Please feel free to take them home with your purchases and return them on subsequent visits. If you have extra bags to donate, simply hang them on the post for others to use.

Plant a Seed, Watch it Grow

Plant a Seed, Watch it Grow

Our Farm Store has a great variety of Certified Organic vegetable, herb, and fruit seeds, many of which are for heirloom varieties.  The seeds are from Nature's Crossroads, a small, family owned seed and gardening business.  The company focuses on sustainability and says their "purpose is to provide Indiana growers- specifically gardeners and small scale farmers-with the organic/eco-friendly seeds, fertilizers and supplies that make sense for where we grow...not California...not Texas...not Maine.  For more information, see www.naturescrossroads.com

If you're intimidated, start small...choose a few things to try and see what happens.  For example, you could plant a few hearts of gold canteloupe seeds, some early crookneck yellow squash, some basil, and corno di toro sweet peppers.  Plant seeds about twice a deep as their radius (this means big seeds get put in holes a few inches down, really small seeds have a scattering of soil covering them).  Water them regularly, and then let mother nature takes its course.

Get your garden started soon - the fruits of your labor will be as local and tasty as it gets!

Recipe of the Week

Recipe of the Week

It's Mother's Day!  Time to serve Mom breakfast in bed.  She'd appreciate something organic and healthy...

Not much of a cook?  No worries, mate, we've got it covered!  Try this:

  1. Take any sublime flavor of TPC Yogurt (Orchard Trio is back - mom probably hasn't had it since last year!)
  2. Add: fresh berries, granola, sunflower seeds, nuts, or anything else that mom enjoys
  3. Sprinkle with love!
  4. Take it to her and watch her smile!
