Invasive Species Pull at Eagle Creek Park
Garlic Mustard, native to Europe, was brought to North America in the 1800's for use as food and for medicinal purposes. The nature of Garlic Mustard crowds out other native species, inhibiting their growth.
FIRST ANNUAL EAGLE CREEK PARK GARLIC MUSTARD PULL!!
Please join the ECP Volunteer Gardeners on Saturday, April 25 between 9:00 AM and Noon to help us control the invasive plant garlic mustard. We will meet at the Earth Discovery Center and divide into groups led by The Gardeners to target specific problem locations where the plant has gained a foothold. Wear sturdy shoes, bring gloves and a trowel, and be ready to tramp through our beautiful woods, weather permitting. We will provide the plastic bags. Rain date is May 2. Friends and family are welcome; just
mention “garlic mustard” at the gatehouse for free admission. Please be prompt, and we hope to see you there!
Organic Gardening
Organic Gardening does not just involve omitting artificial pesticides and fertilizers. It welcomes the living world with all its complexity and aims to create an interconnected balance with all living organisms.
Here are some pointers, Organic Gardening "Do's":
❃ Manage the whole yard organically-edible crops, ornamentals, lawns, and paths.
❃ Learn to distinguish pests from predators.
❃ Make soil care a priority.
❃ Make compost and leaf mold to feed the soil.
❃ Use organically grown seeds where possible.
❃ Consider the environmental implications when choosing materials for hard landscaping, soil improving, and so forth.
❃ Avoid the use of pesticides and preservative-treated wood.
❃ Make local sources your first choice.
❃ Say no to genetically modified cultivators.
❃ Recognize the value of genetic diversity and preservation of threatened cultivators.
These suggestions come from, Grow Organic, (Dorling Kindersley Limited, Great Britian, 2008).
