Our Cows Can Save the Earth
Okay, even our amazing Brown Swiss herd probably can't do this single-handedly...
But now that we've got your attention, did you know that when you drink Trader's Point Creamery milk, your footprint is much greener than if you drank milk from a grain fed cow? Turns out that cows that eat a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (think grass) are better for the planet than those that are fed grain (think corn & soy).
Cows emit gas during digestion (mostly by belching, and most of it as methane). Methane is a gas that has been linked to climate change, or global warming. Scientists studying ways of reducing these greenhouse gases found that in the spring, grass-fed cows emitted considerably less methane. Why? Spring grasses (and to some extent, grass during the remainder of the year) are high in Omega-3 fatty acids. When cows eat food high in Omega-3 fatty acids (i.e. their natural diet!), they are healthier, produce more milk, and emit less greenhouse gas. The scientists speculate that the Omega-3 fatty acids allow the cow's digestive tract (or its FOUR stomachs!) to operate most efficiently.
So when you have that cup of Trader's Point Creamery milk, yogurt, or ice cream, you can rest assured that it comes from a happy, healthy cow that has a smaller footprint than its factory equivalent. How's that for something that tastes good, is good for you and the planet?!

From Tiny Berries to Melon Giants: Get It at the Green Market
While the abundance and variety of vegetables continues to grow at market, we all love to see fruit when we shop for our fresh produce, and this is the month when fruit really becomes king at local markets. As many of our customers are already aware, Traders Point Creamery Green Market only admits vendors who grow their produce without the use of chemicals or synthetic fertilizers.
Since almost all fruit crops have numerous insect and disease pests, growing fruit in an organic manner requires an extra level of time, effort and dedication on the part of the grower. While this means you might see less fruit at our market than at some other markets, you can be assured of a high-quality, chemical-free product that was grown locally. You also know that you are buying from a grower who not only respects the health of the customer, but cares for our local soil and groundwater as well. This week, keep an eye out for blackberries from Redwine Farm and get your cantaloupe and melon from New Leaf Farm. We won’t even mind if you start eating them right there at the farmer’s table!
(This week’s produce fact: Did you know that squashes, cucumbers, melons, pumpkins and gourds all belong to the same large botanical family? The members of this family are grown all over the world in both temperate and tropical climates, and are part of the diet of a number of diverse cultures across the globe.)

Recipe of the Week - Berry Crisp
The fruits of summer - like berries and peaches - are full of flavor and natural sugars. Crisps, also called crumbles, are an ideal dessert for bringing out their natural sweetness.
Blueberry Crisp
- 6 cups blueberries (or substitute other berries, or mix several kinds)
- 2 TBSP brown sugar
- 1 TBSP flour
- 1 TBSP lemon juice
Combine in a bowl; grease a 11x7 inch baking pan and spoon in berry mixture.
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup oats (not steel cut)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 5 TBSP butter
- 1/2 cup diced nuts (optional)
Combine sugar, oats, and cinnamon. Cut in butter with a pastry blender or with two knives until well mixed. Add nuts. Place "crisp" mixture over blueberry mixture. Bake at 375 until bubbly, about 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes
- 1 quart Trader's Point Creamery vanillla ice cream, Trader's Point Creamery Vanilla Lowfat Yogurt, or Trader's Point Creamery Whole Milk Yogurt.
Spoon out servings and top each with ice cream or yogurt.
